TOEFL Exam Format
The TOEFL iBT test evaluates four core language skills. Your performance in all sections contributes to the final score.
1. Reading (35 minutes)
You will read two academic passages, each around 700 words, and answer 10 multiple-choice questions per passage.
This section tests your ability to:
Understand main ideas
Identify specific details
Make inferences
Understand vocabulary in context
Recognise the author’s purpose and structure
2. Listening (26 minutes)
You will listen to:
Three lectures (some with classroom discussions), with six questions each
Two conversations, with five questions each
This section assesses your understanding of:
Main ideas and supporting details
Inferences and speaker attitude
Organisation of spoken information
You are allowed to take notes during this section.
3. Speaking (16 minutes)
This section includes four speaking tasks:
One independent task where you express your opinion on a familiar topic
Three integrated tasks that combine reading, listening and speaking
You are given short preparation time before each response, and your answers are recorded.
4. Writing (29 minutes)
This section includes two writing tasks:
Integrated Writing: Read a passage, listen to a lecture and write a response summarising key points
Writing for an Academic Discussion: Share and support your opinion in a simulated online classroom discussion
Your performance across all four sections is combined to calculate a total TOEFL score ranging from 0 to 120.
