Australia Student Visa Process (Subclass 500)

To study in Australia smoothly, follow the steps below in sequence.

Explore Study Options: Research different courses and educational institutions in Australia that align with your academic goals and career aspirations. Consider factors like course content, university reputation, location, and fees.
Check Entry Requirements: Carefully review the academic and English language proficiency requirements for your chosen course and institution.
Apply to the Institution: Follow the application procedures outlined by your chosen Australian education provider. This usually involves submitting an online application with supporting documents like academic transcripts, English language test results, and a personal statement.

Receive Letter of Offer: If your application is successful, the institution will send you a Letter of Offer. Carefully review the terms and conditions, including course fees, duration, and commencement date.
Accept the Offer: If you wish to proceed, you'll need to formally accept the offer, usually by signing and returning the acceptance form and paying the initial deposit for your tuition fees.

Receive eCoE: Once you've accepted the offer and paid the deposit, the education provider will issue you an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE). This is a crucial document you'll need for your visa application. The eCoE confirms your enrolment in a CRICOS-registered course.

Passport: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Australia. Have a clear copy of the bio-data page ready.
eCoE: You'll need the eCoE code provided by your institution.
Genuine Student (GS) Statement: Prepare a detailed statement addressing the GS criteria. Explain your reasons for choosing your course and Australia, your understanding of the course, its relevance to your future, your immigration history, ties to India, and why you intend to return after your studies.
Financial Capacity Evidence: Gather documents to prove you have sufficient funds for tuition, living expenses (currently AUD 29,710 per year), and travel for at least the first 12 months. This can include bank statements (at least 3 months old), education loan documents, or a letter of financial support from a sponsor with their financial evidence.
English Language Proficiency Test Results: Provide your original test certificate (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, etc.) taken within the last two years, meeting the required scores for your course and institution.
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Evidence: Purchase your OSHC from an approved provider and have proof of your policy.
Health Examinations: You will likely need to undergo medical examinations by a panel physician approved by the Australian High Commission in India. You'll usually get a Health Assessment Portal (HAP) ID to arrange this.
Police Clearance Certificate (PCC): Obtain a PCC from the relevant authorities in India. You might also need PCCs from other countries where you've lived for more than 12 months in the past 10 years.
Academic Transcripts and Certificates: Obtain certified copies of your academic transcripts, mark sheets, and degree certificates from all previously attended educational institutions. These must be translated into English if they are not originally in English.
Passport-Sized Photographs: Have recent passport-sized photographs that meet the Australian visa photo specifications.
Visa Application Form: Be prepared to complete the online Student visa (subclass 500) application form accurately.

Create an ImmiAccount: Go to the website of the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs and create an ImmiAccount.
Complete the Application Form: Log in to your ImmiAccount and complete the Student visa (subclass 500) application form. Ensure all information is accurate and complete.
Upload Supporting Documents: Electronically upload all the required supporting documents you gathered in Step 4. Ensure they are clear, legible, and meet the specified format requirements.
Pay the Visa Application Fee: You will need to pay the visa application fee online using a credit card or other accepted payment methods. As of May 2025, the base application fee is AUD 710, but this is subject to change.

Biometrics Appointment: Depending on your location and current requirements, you may be required to provide your biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) at a designated Visa Application Centre (VAC) in India. You will receive instructions on how to schedule this appointment after submitting your online application.

Undergo Medical Examinations: If you haven't already, schedule and attend your medical examinations with a panel physician as instructed by the Department of Home Affairs. The results will be submitted directly to them.

Wait for a Decision: Once you've submitted your application, uploaded all documents, provided biometrics (if required), and completed your health assessment, your application will be processed by the Department of Home Affairs. Processing times can vary depending on various factors. You can track the progress of your application through your ImmiAccount.
Provide Additional Information if Requested: The Department of Home Affairs may contact you to request further information or documentation during the processing of your application. Respond promptly to any such requests.

Receive Visa Grant Letter: If your visa application is successful, you will receive a Visa Grant Notification letter electronically through your ImmiAccount. This letter will contain important information about your visa, including the visa grant date, conditions, and your initial entry date.

Review Visa Conditions: Carefully read and understand all the conditions attached to your student visa.
Arrange Travel and Accommodation: Book your flights and secure accommodation in Australia.
Inform Your Institution of Your Arrival: Let your education provider know your arrival date.
Pack Essential Documents: Keep copies of your passport, visa grant letter, eCoE, OSHC policy, and other important documents readily accessible during your travel.
