GRE Test Format
There are two main types of GRE tests:
1. GRE General Test:
This is the most common type of GRE test, assessing skills in verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. These skills are considered important for graduate-level studies across various disciplines.
Sections:
Analytical Writing: One section with one “Analyze an Issue” task. You have 30 minutes for this section.
Verbal Reasoning: Two sections with a total of 27 questions. You’ll have approximately 41 minutes in total for these sections.
Quantitative Reasoning: Two sections with a total of 27 questions. You’ll have approximately 47 minutes in total for these sections.
The GRE General Test is computer-delivered.
The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections are section-level adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the second section depends on your performance in the first.
Scoring:
Verbal Reasoning: 130-170 (in 1-point increments)
Quantitative Reasoning: 130-170 (in 1-point increments)
Analytical Writing: 0-6 (in half-point increments)
The total testing time is about 1 hour and 58 minutes.
2. GRE Subject Tests:
These tests are designed to evaluate your in-depth knowledge and understanding in a specific academic discipline.
Currently, there are three GRE Subject Tests available:
Mathematics: Consists of approximately 66 multiple-choice questions covering calculus, algebra, and other areas of mathematics. The test duration is 2 hours and 50 minutes.
Physics: Contains approximately 70 multiple-choice questions covering classical mechanics, electromagnetism, optics and wave phenomena, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, atomic physics, special relativity, laboratory methods, and specialized topics. The test duration is 2 hours.
Psychology: Includes approximately 144 multiple-choice questions from biological, cognitive, social, developmental, clinical, and measurement/methodology/other areas of psychology. The test duration is 2 hours.
GRE Subject Tests are paper-delivered tests.
Scoring: Subject Tests report one total score on a 200–990 scale, in 10-point increments.
These tests are typically offered three times a year (in September, October, and April).
They are intended for students who have an undergraduate major or extensive background in the specific subject.
