Guide to Canadian Visitor Visas for Indian Citizens

For Indian travellers planning a trip to Canada, understanding the available visitor visa categories is the first step toward a smooth application process. In general, Canada issues visitor visas under the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) category, with each type created for a specific travel purpose.

Below, you will find a clear explanation of the main visa options.

Types of Canadian Visitor Visas

1. Visitor Visa (Tourist Visa / TRV)

This is the most commonly issued visitor visa.

Usually, applicants receive one of the following:

  • Multiple-Entry Visa: Allows travel in and out of Canada multiple times for the visa’s validity period (up to 10 years or until passport expiry). Moreover, each visit generally permits a stay of up to six months, depending on the border officer’s decision.

  • Single-Entry Visa: Permits entry only once. However, leaving Canada—except for short trips to the U.S. or St. Pierre and Miquelon—requires a new visa for re-entry.

2. Super Visa (Parents and Grandparents)

The Super Visa is designed for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Key advantages include:

  • Extended stays of up to five years per visit
  • Multiple entries for up to ten years
  • Income requirement for the host in Canada
  • Mandatory private medical insurance from a Canadian provider

3. Transit Visa

A Transit Visa is required for Indian passport holders passing through Canada for under 48 hours while travelling to another country.

In some cases, travellers eligible for visa-free transit may need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Currently, most Indian citizens must apply for a transit visa before travel.

Canada Visitor Visa Fees

1. Government of Canada Fees (Mandatory)

These fees are paid to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and are quoted in Canadian Dollars (CAD). Therefore, INR amounts vary based on exchange rates.

  • Application Fees:
    • CAD 100 per person
    • CAD 500 for families (five or more applicants)
  • Biometrics Fees:
    • CAD 85 per person
    • CAD 170 for families (two or more applicants)

As a result, the total mandatory fee for one applicant is CAD 185.

2. Medical Examination Fee (If Required)

Medical tests are not required in every case. However, IRCC may request one if your stay exceeds six months or based on travel history.

Estimated costs in India:

  • Adults: ₹4,000 – ₹7,000
  • Children (11–14 years): ₹3,500 – ₹5,500
  • Children (0–10 years): ₹2,500 – ₹4,50
