PTE Test Format

1. Speaking & Writing (54–67 minutes)

This section is conducted together and includes the following question types:

  • Personal Introduction: (Non-scored) A brief introduction about yourself.
  • Read Aloud: Read a short text aloud.
  • Repeat Sentence: Listen to and repeat a sentence.
  • Describe Image: Describe an image.
  • Re-tell Lecture: Summarize a lecture you hear.
  • Answer Short Question: Provide brief answers to spoken questions.
  • Summarize Written Text: Write a one-sentence summary of a text.
  • Write Essay: Write a 200-300 word essay.

2. Reading (29–30 minutes)

This section assesses your reading skills through these question types:

  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: Choose all correct answers.
  • Re-order Paragraphs: Arrange jumbled paragraphs in the correct order.
  • Fill in the Blanks (Reading & Writing): Complete sentences with words from drop-down menus.
  • Fill in the Blanks (Reading): Complete blanks by dragging words from a box.
  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Choose one correct answer.

3. Listening (30–43 minutes)

This section tests your ability to understand spoken English with these question types:

  • Summarize Spoken Text: Write a 50-70 word summary of a recording.
  • Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers: Choose all correct answers.
  • Fill in the Blanks: Complete a transcript with missing words.
  • Highlight Correct Summary: Choose the best summary of a recording.
  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer: Choose one correct answer.
  • Select Missing Word: Choose the missing word in a recording.
  • Highlight Incorrect Words: Identify words that differ from the recording.
  • Write from Dictation: Type a sentence you hear.

The total duration of the PTE Academic test is approximately 2 hours. Your performance across these sections and question types contributes to your overall score, which ranges from 10 to 90.
