UK Student Visa Process

The visa process for studying in the UK involves several key steps. Here’s a general overview, keeping in mind that you should always consult the official UK government website (www.gov.uk) for the most accurate and up-to-date information:

Get an Unconditional Offer: First, you need to apply to a UK educational institution and receive an unconditional offer for a course.
Accept the Offer: Once you have the unconditional offer, you need to formally accept it.
Receive a CAS: After accepting, the university will issue you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). This is a unique reference number that the university sends directly to the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). You'll need this number to apply for your visa. The CAS confirms details about your course, tuition fees, and living costs.

Gather all the necessary supporting documents.

Go to the official UK government website (www.gov.uk) and complete the online Student Visa application form.
You will need to create an account.
During the application, you'll provide your personal details, passport information, CAS number, and information about your finances.
You will also need to pay the visa application fee online. As of May 2025, the fee for applying for a Student visa from outside the UK is £490.

As part of your application, if you are staying in the UK for more than six months, you will likely need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). This fee allows you to access the UK's National Health Service (NHS). The current surcharge for a student visa is £776 per year. You will pay this online during your visa application.

After submitting your online application and paying the fees, you will need to book an appointment at a visa application centre in your country of residence (in your case, India).
At the appointment, you will provide your biometric information (fingerprints and a photograph).

Attend your scheduled appointment at the visa application centre and submit your supporting documents (if required – some applicants from low-risk countries may not need to submit documents at this stage but must have them ready if asked).

The processing time for a UK Student Visa application made from outside the UK is typically around 3 weeks. However, this can vary depending on the volume of applications and individual circumstances. You may be able to pay for a priority service for a faster decision, if available in your location.

If your application is successful, you will receive an eVisa, which is an online record of your immigration status. You will need to create a UKVI account to access it.

If you applied for a visa for more than 6 months, you will likely receive a vignette (sticker) in your passport that is valid for a short period (usually 90 days). During this time, you will need to collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from a designated post office in the UK. Your decision letter will specify where to collect it.
